The first thing that impressed me about this coat is the weight – it feels substantial and on the heavier side, which is nice especially for the chillier weather. Ultimately this looks and feels like something Drake’s would make but at 1/3 the price (even less if you can get on sale).
It definitely fits a bit "oversized" but it’s supposed to. I usually wear a size 38R, tried both a 38R and 36R and kept the 38. Fits great over just a crewneck or sweater and also has plenty of room to layer an additional jacket underneath if needed. The raglan sleeves are a nice touch that adds ease of movement.
My trivial nitpick is the interior tag, which is just the same old white J.CREW on navy rectangle, reminding me of their wayward days when quality was in decline. I’m not sure if this design is from then or new under Brendon’s leadership, but either way would have been nice to see something more nuanced or refreshed there (the red oarsman on green is great.)

I am extremely satisfied with this purchase. The Rivington Car Coat is not only well-constructed (100% cotton, which is quite rare at this price point) but also offers a subtle and refined aesthetic. It aligns with J.Crew’s humble philosophy that you wear the clothing, and it’s not about the brand wearing you—the clothing does not define you; rather, you define the clothing. This idea, as Brendon Babenzien has eloquently expressed in recent interviews, is reflected in the understated and versatile design of this coat. While I also own J.Crew’s Ludlow trench coat in water-resistant cotton, which is an excellent piece in its own right, I find the Rivington Car Coat to be slightly better. It strikes a perfect balance between casual and tailored looks, making it more versatile for different occasions.
Size and Fit:
I am roughly 5’4" and weigh roughly 123 pounds. I ordered the coat in size 34/s, and it falls just below my knees—my preferred length. The sleeves are well-proportioned, with a sturdy length that doesn’t cover my hands excessively (falling just below my wrists), allowing room for layering with a suit jacket, chore coat, or denim jacket.
It’s important to note that the Rivington Car Coat fits longer than previous J.Crew car coats. For instance, J.Crew’s car coats from around 2017-2019 were significantly shorter and didn’t extend below the knee as this one does. However, I also own a size 38/s in the Rivington Car Coat in wool-blend herringbone (AW 2024), which shares the same length as this water-resistant cotton twill version, despite the larger size. Based on my experience, the length of J.Crew’s car coats seem to vary depending on the fabric, and I suspect the wool-blend herringbone version in size 34/s would be slightly shorter than the cotton twill in the same size. I’d highly recommend trying these coats on in-store to get a sense of how the fit and fabric choices affect the overall length and look.
