I purchased two of these for my granddaughters age 2.5 (average size) and 5 (she is slender). I ordered a size 3 and 5. They are so cute and the girls loved them as well as their mothers. Both are a little big but my one DIL has a "gadget" that could temporarily make the waist smaller on them. Most likely both will be able to wear again next holiday season. I would say stay with age size if you are wanting it to fit a certain age and possibly size down if your girl is slender.
